Flashes and more...

I have recently re-joined the Yahoo Group Flash Xrs. I think that having to write a story in under 1000 words will help me get my creative juices flowing. Though I need to learn to separate novel writing from flash fiction writing, since the latter is a complete story in under 1000 words (some people think in under 500 words.)

Here is an example of flash fiction or a vignette.

Skin Deep by Rita L. Smith

(Word Count 98)

Prompt: "What do you think of my new dress?"

A skin tight mermaid dress showed off her fat. Her hair was a mess. The makeup didn’t hide the wrinkles. Blind date indeed! My friends certainly must have been blind to fix me up with this creature.

“Well, how do I look?”

“Uh, ah. Are you going to a costume party?”

“As a matter of fact I am.”

I sighed. My date and I were going to a movie.

“Well?” she asked.

“What?”

“How do I look?”

“Fine.” I answered as my date entered the room.

I ran… I could have dealt with the mermaid, but the snake…
