As I drove homeward bound a groundhog sped across the highway. Though I tried to slow down so I would miss it, still I hit it. The poor thing was able to get itself off the road and into the bushes. I continued on my way with a heavy heart.
After making a trip to the doctors, home and then out again, my light for the coolant came on. I managed to get myself to the closest repair shop. Fortunately, they were still open. Well, kind of... Everyone had gone home, except the man counting the money drawer. He took my keys saying that they would look at it first thing. I asked if he knew of anyone with a rental car. His answer was, "As a matter of fact we just serviced one for Hertz. I'll call and see if you can rent it." The guy from Hertz said to drive it to their office and I rented it on the spot. I was lucky not to have to go without a car.
The next day the repair place called and asked me what I had ran over. I asked, "How'd you know I ran over a groundhog?" I could hear a chuckle on the other end. Apparently, my radiator, condenser and cooling fan had been damaged in the "accident."
So, the groundhog has paid me back for hitting it. I wonder if he had insurance?
